Today we focus on Miriam, an instrument chosen by God who from childhood was useful. With his beautiful little face, bathed in tears, little Moses opened the heart of the princess, who decided to adopt him.With courage and boldness, little Miriam touched the princess’s heart to find someone to nurse the baby.With tar and pitch and lots of love Jochebed prepared the basket that saved her son, the future great leader of Israel.Read about it in Exodus 15, the basis for today’s story. But now the focus is on the beginning of his life and on the three women mentioned. We can add another woman to the number, Zipporah, Moses’ wife. Had it not been for them, Israel’s history would be very different. These are the three women behind the great man Moses. When the boy grew older he went to live in the palace as the son of the king’s daughter. When Miriam brought her mother and introduced her, the princess offered to pay Jochebed to raise the child. Right there, she decided to take care of him. When this woman saw the child in the basket, she felt compassion for him. She was the one who gave him the name Moses. This is the third woman who played a great role in the life of Moses. When the princess came out to the river and found the basket with the child, Miriam ran to her and offered to go find a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby. When her mother put the baby in the river, Miriam stood at a distance to see what would happen. We don’t know how old this girl was–maybe she was six or seven. I imagine she did it with a prayer to God for the protection of her beautiful baby boy. She got a papyrus basket, coted it with tar and pitch, and there she put her precious three months old baby. What mother doesn’t see beauty in her child? She had to obey the king’s order but she did it very creatively. Like any mother, she saw that her son was a fine child. The king’s edict was that all the boys born to Israelite families had to be thrown into the river but this mother couldn’t do it. The three instrumental women in the first years of his life: Jochebed, Miriam and the Egyptian princess. God chose three women to each play a very important role in forming this man. Let’s have a look at three of the women that played an important role in the life of Moses.įrom eternity God had already chosen the man who would bring his people, Israel, out of slavery in Egypt. It’s often said that behind every great man there is an even greater woman.
